A musician, composer, and oud player, I blend different soundscapes to produce a distinct sound for the Arabic oud. I am most interested in maqam, microtonal polyphony, and original instrumentation for the oud.

I was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1982 to a Palestinian family from the coast of Palestine. I started my formal music education with the oud in 1989 at the National Music Conservatory of Amman, Jordan under the tutelage of Sakher Hattar. While in Amman, I also received tutelage and guidance from Iraqi oud virtuoso Munir Bashir. Since the 1990s, I have performed widely as a soloist and an ensemble member throughout the Middle East, Europe, and North America. I have also given lectures and workshops on Arabic oud, maqam theory and Arabic music history. In 2012, I established the Juthoor project in Amman, and in 2020 I co-founded the world music trio “Les Arrivants” in Montreal. I released my debut solo album “Juthoor” in 2020, and Les Arrivants released its debut album “Home” in 2022. My projects have been supported by the Abdul-Hameed Shoman Foundation and Bank Al Etihad Foundation in Jordan, as well as the Canada Council of the Arts (CCA) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec (CALQ).

ولدت في بيروت، لبنان عام 1982 لعائلة فلسطينية من ساحل فلسطين. بدأت تعليمي الموسيقي الرسمي على آلة العود عام 1989 في المعهد الوطني للموسيقى في عمان تحت إشراف الأستاذ صخر حتر. خلال فترة دراستي في عمّان، تلقيت النصح والتوجيه من فنان العود العراقي المبدع منير بشير. منذ تسعينات القرن العشرين، شاركت كعازف منفرد وضمن فرق مختلفة في العديد من المسابقات والمهرجانات والحفلات في العالم العربي وأوروبا وأمريكا الشمالية. بالإضافة، قدمت العديد من المحاضرات وورشات العمل حول العود العربي، نظرية المقام، وتاريخ الموسيقى العربية. أسست مشروع “جذور” عام 2012 في عمان وثلاثي “القادمون” عام 2020 في مونتريال. أطلقت ألبومي الأول “جذور” عام 2020 وأطلق “القادمون” ألبومهم الأول “دار” عام 2022. حازت مشاريعي على منح من مؤسسة عبد الحميد شومان ومؤسسة بنك الإتحاد في الأردن، بالإضافة لمجلس كندا للفنون ومجلس كيبيك للفنون والآداب

Juthoor

Juthoor (Roots) is a project that seeks to revive the instrumental heritage of the Middle East and develop it for contemporary appreciation. Juthoor fuses influences from as far east as Armenia to as far west as Greece, passing through Iraq, Greater Syria, Turkey and Egypt to produce modern instrumental Middle Eastern music with an unmistakably Levantine interpretation. Juthoor represents the maturation of a generation of Jordanian musicians and musical experiences and is thus a reflection of Jordan’s complex and evolving musical identity.

جذور

مشروع يسعى لإحياء الموروث الموسيقي الآلاتي للمشرق العربي وتطويره للذائقة العصرية. يصهر “جذور” تأثيرات موسيقية شتى من أرمينيا في الشرق إلى اليونان في الغرب مروراً بالعراق وسوريا الكبرى وتركيا ومصر لإنتاج موسيقى آلاتية مشرقية. يعكس “جذور” نضج جيل من الموسيقيين الأردنيين والتجارب الموسيقية الأردنية، ويعبر بالتالي عن هوية الأردن الموسيقية العصرية والمركبة

Les Arrivants

Les Arrivants (The Arrivals) is comprised of myself, Hamin Honari (percussion) and Amichai Ben Shalev (bandoneon), three musicians who settled in Montréal during the COVID-19 pandemic between the summers of 2019 and 2020. The repertoire we developed in Les Arrivants mirrors our resettlement experience. It is informed by the traditions we have mastered throughout our careers – Argentine Tango, Classical Arabic music, and traditional Persian rhythms. Our music captures the highs and lows of the resettlement experience, the nostalgia and longing for places and people left behind, and the search for new comforts and goals. It also expresses the joys of seeing friendly faces in times of great uncertainty and turmoil, and anger at global injustices and inequalities exacerbated by the pandemic.

القادمون

يتألف ثلاثي القادمون مني ومن هامين هنري (إيقاع) ومن عميحاي بن شاليف (باندونيون)، حيث استقرينا في مونتريال خلال جائحة كورونا بين صيفي 2019 و2020. يعكس الصوت الذي طورناه تجربتنا في إعادة الاستقرار، وهو صوت مستوحى من التقاليد الموسيقية التي أتقناها طوال حياتنا – التانغو الأرجنتيني، والموسيقى العربية الكلاسيكية، والإيقاعات الفارسية التقليدية. يعكس صوت القادمون أيضًا الاحتمالات الموسيقية التي لا يمكن أن تظهر إلا من مدينة عالمية متعددة الإثنيات مثل مونتريال. ابتكرنا في ثلاثي القادمون تجربة صوتية استبطانية تصور علاقات ووجهات نظر الوافدين الجدد إلى مونتريال، بينما تواجه المشاعر المعقدة المرتبطة بالهجرة والسفر. تعكس موسيقى القادمون تجربة إعادة الاستقرار، والحنين إلى الماضي والشوق إلى الأماكن والأشخاص، والبحث عن وسائل الراحة والطموحات الجديدة. كما يعبر عن بهجة رؤية الوجوه الودودة في أوقات عدم اليقين والاضطراب الشديد، والغضب من المظالم والتفاوتات العالمية التي تفاقمت بسبب الوباء

Burkaan (Volcano)

Transposition

A duet project for oud and cello that produces a sonic experience transcending genres, borders, and traditions. In music, transposition refers to adapting and manipulating pitches to play in harmony. Broadly, transposition refers to changing time periods, locations, sequences, forms, natures, and/or creating a new manner of expression. The project combines microtonal maqam with polyphony and harmony to produce a neo-classical sound merging East and West.

تحويل

ثنائي للعود والتشيللو يسعى لخلق موسيقى تتجاوز التراث والحدود والتقاليد والأنواع الموسيقية. يأخذ المشروع اسمه من مصطلح موسيقي يعني نقل أو تحويل الطبقة الموسيقية للعزف بسلاسة وانسجام، ولكن المعنـى الأوسع للمصطلح هو الانتقال الزمني أو المكاني أو النسقي أو النموذجي أو الطبيعي أو/و خلق أدوات تعبير جديدة. يدمج المشروع المقام مع الهارموني وتعدد الأصوات لإنتاج موسيقية نيو-كلاسيكية تدمج الشرق والغرب

Hayrah (Confusion)

Najwa – Music of the Mashriq

An Arabic music quartet project that develops and present the music of the Mashriq – the geographical area comprising Egypt, Greater Syria (Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Jordan), and Iraq. The project derives its title (Najwa) from an Arabic female name which means revealing the secrets and emotions of the heart, and entails a collaborative revelation of the emotions and secrets of the Mashriq’s musical heritage, which the musicians share among themselves and communicate to listeners. Najwa offers modern interpretations of traditional and contemporary instrumental pieces that are heavily reliant on improvisations. It thus highlights the rhythmic and melodic wealth of the Mashriq’s music and the tonal distinction of Arabic maqam.

نجوى – موسيقى المشرق

رباعي للموسيقى العربية يطور ويقدم موسيقى المشرق العربي – الحيز الجغرافي الذي يتضمن مصر، بلاد الشام (لبنان، سوريا، فلسطين والأردن) والعراق. “نجوى” هو اسم مؤنث عربي يعني إظهار ما في القلب من عواطف وأسرار، وسمي المشروع بهذا الاسم لما يهدف إليه من بوح جماعي للعواطف والأسرار التي يحويها الموروث الموسيقي المشرقي، والتي يتشارك بها الموسيقيون وينقلوها إلى المستمعين. يعرض “نجوى” تأويلات وتفسيرات حديثة لمقطوعات تقليدية ومعاصرة ذات اعتماد كبير على الارتجال، وبذلك ينقل الغنى النغمي والإيقاعي لموسيقى المشرق والفرادة الصوتية للمقام العربي
